Because atheism is based of rationalism and theism is based on faith.

Nope atheism is based on lack of faith not rationalism.

While I would say atheism isn't really 'based' on something - it's just a single response to a single question - you're right in the sense that atheism =/= rationalism.  People can be atheists for very bad, very irrational reasons, just like theists can be theists for similarly bad/irrational reasons.

Like if someone said "I'm an atheist because my church leaders were really cruel and acted horribly towards me", I might sympathize with them and try to help them feel better, but I would also say that's a bad, irrational reason to be an atheist - it has nothing to do with the examination of the (lack of) evidence, arguments, or philosophical concepts associated with the existence of god, it's just based on emotions.
