A lot of my favorite bands get categorized into genres they don't like.
It's certainly progressive metal. At least to an extent. Same with Riverside.
Either way, Lateralus is one of the best albums ever made. And I fucking adore Rapid Eye Movement by Riverside, too.
Personally I'm not a fan of limiting truly awesome music to any genres anyway... as they often don't fit.
Like my favorite band ever, Orbital, are they techno? Are they electronica? Trance? Breakbeat? Progressive Techno? IDM? All of the above? The closest you get to their style is Underworld.... probably down to the fact both bands are friends with each other and they started making music around the same time around the same scene. But Orbital are still way more melodic and Underworld are more trancey.... and Underworld use surreal vocals throughout all their music. Anyways...
I think the best bands often are a blend of different styles. They offer something unique.
And albums are especially delicious works of art.
10,000 days is great. But the tracks are more hit and miss than Lateralus. Every track is perfect on Lateralus.
I'd say Parabol + Parabola together is my favorite stuff Tool has ever done.
Have you heard Porcupine Tree?
They're very progressive. Here's one of my favorites by them:
And the opener to Rapid Eye Movement by Riverside has gotta be another killer:
