Blues and Jazz discussion thread

Since everyone thinks a Blues and Jazz thread would be awesome, but no one starts one, I'll do it
I'm only semi-Jazz-literate, but I've been known to listen to it and go to Jazz clubs when there's the opportunity. One of my favourite Jazz things is the Que Viva Mingus! Largely Latin album by the Mingus Big Band

One day I stumbled across this by sheer accident

and first didn't quite believe my ears, and then was strangely fascinated.
When I was in Chicago a coupl'a years back, I went to the Blue Chicago and saw these guys. Good times, but man that owner is a curmudgeon

There's as much jazz out there that I really love as there is that I really hate. An old, overly style-conscious buddy of mine in Boston got me hooked onto Theloneous Monk. On my own, I found the Hard Bop channel on JAZZRADIO.com, which is on iTunes. That seems to be the subgenre of old jazz that I like by far the best, but I'm still learning about it.

Hiya Alex, sorry I've been so busy I couldn't get this one going. I'm at work on my phone right now, but I'll post some faves when I get home.

Since "office" is your euphemism for the east Texan rain forest, I wonder what "phone" stands for

I like Jazz that is old and dead. Like Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. Together or separately.

I like jazz but haven't had time to learn much about it. I just use the radio stations on Rhapsody. So far my favorite is West Coast Jazz.

One of the coolest things that ever happened to me involved jazz. When I was in high school, I played the trombone in our school's marching band and symphony. We were pretty good, had about 140 members, and in particular, during my sophomore year the group was extremely talented. Steve Turre (contemporary jazz trombonist, 31-year member of the Saturday Night Live band, and world-renowned conch shell player) was the guest star at one of our concerts. I didn't really get to meet him, sadly, but one of the songs he did with us was Duke Ellington's Black and Tan Fantasy. It was glorious. It's one of my favorite songs ever, and to play it with a legit professional was one of the neatest experiences in my life.
Here's Steve Turre:

Don't worry, my friend. If this be the end, then so shall it be.
