^^^ This. ^^^
I had to pay for an ACL reconstruction + MRI + appointments with the surgeon almost completely out of pocket last year. I had $7500 in out of pocket costs in addition to premiums. $6000, up front. Now, I happened to have the money. If I didn't, I could get credit and manage the debt. For a lot of people, the best option would be to put it on a credit card with usurious rates, or take out a home equity loan.
So what's a guy who does manual labor, but doesn't have the scratch, or the credit supposed to work with a blown out knee? Or the bartender who needs a hip replacement like my younger brother?
The view from middle class America is can be pretty myopic.
