If you're in law enforcement you're going to get paid by the government regardless of what particular job you have. If they weren't working at a school, they'd be working somewhere else, also getting paid by our tax dollars.
We have a cop that stops by during the carpool 30 minutes a couple times a week to punish speeders in the school zone. Perhaps if they made it a part of the job to stop by schools on a semi regular basis. Just the notion that if you're planning on going on a shooting spree, there could be a cop there would change things.
These shooters are essentially sacrificing their lives to be able to kill some kids at the school. Right now, it's a sure thing. If there was a chance they'd be sacrificing their life and not get to shoot anyone, that may change the mental math they do.
