If we could have a world without guns it would be great. But no, it wouldn't, we'd still have swords and knives and clubs, and if we got rid of those we'd still have pitchforks and arms and legs. So we have to do something that will deal with reality. Reality is there are guns and anyone that wants one bad enough can get one. So yes, education, but yes, also protection. It's not an either/or. They're addressing two different, but related issues. My .02c

Their is a reason this is the weapon of choice for mass murders .

Of course, I made no argument about the number of people able to be killed with a semi-auto vs a knife vs a rock. But the usual way to repel a superior weapon is with an equal or superior weapon. Again, it's good to get rid of guns, but that's not a reality in our world, any more than getting rid of people. So it's a hard problem, you can educate, but education takes a long time, a whole generation to be exact, to change a way of thinking, and what are we going to do to protect the kids in the meantime?
