I think guns would prevent tyranny, but I'm not worried about tyranny. The context of the discussion was whether or not guns would prevent tyranny, not if tyranny was likely. I don't think it's likely.
That being said, I think stockpiling weapons in the event of some level of societal collapse is practical. I'm not doing it, but that's just me gambling that it won't happen. I don't think the risk of situations where you'd absolutely want to be very well-armed is that small anymore.
No it is not, why the hell would anyone want to live if a nuclear war happened, not me. We are not living in the days of conquest anymore, nukes exist worldwide, an American economy collapse would have worldwide affects and we have a narcissist as president who doesn't understand what mutual destruction is. If you manage to survive the initial nukes, you'd still be dealing with mass food source disruption, food and water poisoned by radiation, death would follow everyone around you if not you yourself.
No, the only practical thing is avoiding a collapse, not racing to one. I could give a shit less about surviving that kind of war. I'd hope if my species gets that stupid, I'd be right under a nuke and get vaporized. No need for stock piling weapons. Nope, what we need is global diplomacy, not dicks with egos as world leaders.
