It's called the Moon, because you don't need names for things until you have more than one of them (this is why the native names of groups of human beings almost always mean something akin to 'people' or 'us').
I find 'the Moon' to be a perfectly acceptable definition of Earth's satellite. However, if it must be given a more formal name, I suggest 'Ecne', after the Celtic god of knowledge and wisdom. Pitifully few celestial bodies get their names from Irish myth.
