I'd take a guess that if someone was going to look at it statistically, and look at potential motivations then a profiler probably would say it's most likely to be a white male.  But it's not like that's always accurate though.

It's possible that if someone wanted to kill a specific person that the killer would muddy the waters by bumping off other people to disguise the intended victim as just one of the random murders.  It's even possible that the intended victim hasn't been killed yet.  So one segment of the investigation should focus on identifying anything about the victims that would make someone want to kill them.  Things like insurance policies, divorces, child custody battles, affairs, etc.
