He wasn't wrong in his reasoning that executed inmates don't become repeat offenders.
Having said that the recidivism rate of paroled murderers is considerably lower than it is for people convicted of other violent crimes. One of the reasons for this is believed to be the murderers spend more time in jail so they are older when they get out and less likely to kill again. While that isn't much of an argument for the death penalty, it is a decent argument for longer sentences for other types of violent offenders.
There's a problem right there: Paroled murderers.
If you're not going to have the death penalty for murder, then life needs to mean life. You come out of prison in a box.
