I think a lot of what I am can be traced back to various less-than-pleasant encounters with people, starting with some teasing in kindergarten and dealing with a mentally ill family member. It resulted in a lot of chronic stress but also gave me a solid internal locus of control -- If I couldn't trust them I had to trust myself, and rather than expecting others to provide what I needed, I went out and created it myself.
It took me until about age 14 to get a handle on the emotions that these encounters triggered. If I could change anything, I'd like to have that insight at a younger age, reduce my baseline stress, and build up a few more people skills. I've come a long way, but there's still traces of the early, hurting me that I'd like to uproot.
