Btw, I'm in favor of universal healthcare. I want it for me. But I HATE the 'developed world' argument. It's a meaningless list of cherrypicked countries.
You know privately owned hospitals accept the public insurance, right? Whether the hospital itself is private generally does not matter (in terms of coverage. I'd agree that private institutions are almost always superior in quality to public ones.) 80% of Japan's hospitals are private but are not-for-profit and accept government insurance. Then again, the government sets the prices there anyway.
I don't think that's the case in all the countries min put on the list. I know it's not the case for Venezuela, as one of my best friends grew up there and said public hospitals were basically garbage.
But my original point is more about the obnoxious habit of people saying "every country but America....." It's always followed by an untrue statement.
