A while back, I read a book called What’s the matter with Kansas? and it was all about how the Republican Party convinces poor people like this to vote for politicians whose policies are diametrically opposed to their own well-being by appealing to their “salt of the Earth” sensibilities. That was published in 04. It evidently took 14 more years for them to figure it out.
