I hate the word faggot... I don't mind being called our word... poof... at all (well, less) cos it's almost playful in a way, or it can be made to feel that way... generally it's used more lightly I think, but I'd hate to be called a faggot; that word is much more raw and horrible (imo). Indeed, the most hurtful homophobic remarks I've come up against were from Brits using the word fag/faggot instead of poof, since that word does seem to be catching on a bit over here.
