Hardly a european problem.  More of a human problem.  Whomever holds the most efficient means of slaughter ends up posting the biggest numbers at any given time.  Once upon a time, it was the islamic empire, they cut a swath across the known world.  Then... they lost that edge, and became the wheat instead of the thresher.

Islamic expansions didn't match the brutality of Christian expansions; historical evidence point to that fact. If that tells us something; it tells us that there is something seriously wrong in the culture coming from the direction of Europe.
Another example is the Mongol expansions: they had a very serious issue with their culture that literally advocated torture and taking joy in the pain of others.
Once upon a time it was a blessing to be surrounded by the Sultan's bodyguards who protected you from the barbarian hordes.
