Any invasion of japan, regardless of the initial casualties..would have turned into something we should all be very familiar with today. The difference being that those combatants would have been the equals of american forces from the very start...and we wouldn;t have been going..even on pretext, to save or liberate anyone. My Lai would look like a humanitarian relief effort in comparison.
My personal favorite, on the decision to nuke japan...and maybe one of you guys can remember who said it for me..is that it really wasn;t much of a decision at all. They had an idea of the cost of an assault. They understood that the japanese were ready for some desperate shit, they;d just had a bit of experience with that in the island hopping campaign, and they possessed a weapon that could sidestep all of that. Domestically, we might have lynched the president of the united states if we learned that he could have dropped the bombs and instead decided to send more american sons into the meat grinder on account of.... maybe... saving a few japanese lives? At that point in time I;m pretty sure we;d have accepted 500k (any number, really) dead japanese babies in trade for a single american soldier.

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
