I lost interest in Trek when they decided everything had to be retro and with Abrams movies.
Discovery is good if you can get past the main character's background (I still hate her foster parentage - a new character would've worked just as well without making the universe seem smaller). It's not connected to anything Abrams. It takes place just before TOS.
I think that prequels are more attractive to potential show writers because Voyager went to anime levels of technology power creep. By the end there was almost nothing a dose of Borg nanoprobes couldn't fix. It's hard enough to create drama in a post-scarcity setting without that.
