Because it is human to take shortcuts. While many people do the heavy lifting of confirming what they have been told by seemingly credible authorities, many more do not. Or cannot. Who has the time? I am often shake my head at some of the anti-intellectualism in modern evangelical churchs and even Catholics have the fideists.
