It seems to me, that whatarty did what a long long time ago has little bearing on whether personal harassment of public figures is acceptable.
One distinction that I think is important, is that it seems that some think this means that you can’t criticize or speak out against someone. I don’t think this was the spirit of the OP was about, But rather going to people homes, mobbing them in public, or disrupting them at dinner or a movie. That we can have a civilized (even if heated) discussion about issues, without the crazy and hatred.
