Well, for Christians there is that whole thing about, you know...being forgiven.
Yeah, here's this about that.
Suppose there's a murderer. Not just your average, run-of-the-mill Mafia contract killer, but a committed, cannibalistic, paedophile, torturing killer. These hobbies consume him for years before he's caught, and his victims number around 20. The day before his execution (we're assuming this happened in America), he has a sincere conversion and repentance. He realizes the horrors he's committed, the grief and pain he caused to his victims and their families. He repents with all of his heart, and spends his last hours in supplicatory prayer. God hears him, forgives him, and he gets into Heaven.
Now suppose there's a father. Not particularly religious, but he does believe. Goes to church on a more or less regular basis, volunteers for community charity functions, that sort of thing. Works hard for his family, has never broken the law or caused harm to anyone. One day, his nine year old daughter goes missing. Her raped and mutilated body is found weeks later. The father cannot stand the loss and eventually blows his brains out, his last words being, 'Fuck you, God.' Dying with the unforgiven sin of blasphemy on his soul, he goes to Hell.
If this whole 'forgiveness' paradigm doesn't strike you as seriously fucked up, there's something very, VERY wrong with you.
