I have one friend, so I don't have to worry about peaking into the windows of virtual strangers. I have "liked" a range of news sources, museums, and climate change organizations I enjoy following. And I am collecting beautiful paintings and photography with the "share" function.
The thing is, there used to be message boards dedicated to those subjects. You need not have have joined this monolithic group which exists for no other reason than to mine your data and sell it to third parties.
You are not a costumer on Facebook. You are a commodity.
Facebook has provided nice exposure for countless small businesses.

How so? If it wasn't for Facebook, I wouldn't have gotten creative enough for my cat to have his own blog.
Quote:Why are you here on AF rather than a stupid Facebook group? It's better, right? So is everything else. A dedicated message forum has higher standards. Facebook lowers the bar.
Plus, I don't want to put all my information out for the world to see. I feel comfortable enough putting it out here because it's a limited arena. Why would I want to open myself up to an enormous forum - with very few individuals of which I have any affinity for at all?
They have these awesome things called privacy settings. With me - if you aren't in my friends list and you go to my wall you don't see my friends list or my photos. I've publicly shared maybe a handful of things and that's it. Non-friends see nothing. I'd say that's pretty damn private.
You post here - it's all public. Even guests who aren't members are allowed to lurk in subforums and read whatever they want. There's very few places here they can't go like the 18+ subforums. The only downside is that they cannot post unless they are a member, but all your other stuff is free to see.
Facebook is by no means perfect, but it's free for people to reconnect with just about anyone. You can block undesirables so they don't even see your home page.
