To be somewhat fair, and while I agree, they are gullible and mislead with the argument "An object can't do anything on it's own". That part is true. But if that society has a shitty attitude about that object, it is far easier to let people get a hold of that object who should not have them.
Just like religion too. A Koran or bible are just objects, but if the wrong person picks it up, you end up with the KKK or Isis.
The worst part is the same with cars. The car industry screamed and shouted that they would go out of business if they were forced to add seat belts, but what do you know, cars still exist. Now we have the potential to move to smart guns, but no, cant have that.
