Over-the-top literary tropes often serve to shut down debate and may even encourage violence.
For example if we say, "religion makes parents stay home and pray instead of taking their sick kids to the hospital," that's synecdoche. We use the term for the whole (religion) to refer to a tiny part (idiot American Christian anti-vaxxer-types).
Or if we say, "science flies you to the moon but religion flies your planes into the World Trade Center," this is metonymy. Because it uses a large term (religion) to refer to something which is sometimes associated with that term (non-observant Muslim men enraged by violent US foreign policy). This over-simplification actually paralleled America's stupid reaction to 9-11 and allowed the government to give the hijackers all the political goals they aimed for, while still appearing tough.
