It's changed over the last few years due to changes in the rules. It used to be shotgun, pistol and muzzleloader only. They have opened it up to include rifles chambered in certain cartridges - mostly pistol calibers.
I was using a 12 gauge bolt action I built 10 years ago. Worked great. Killed dozens of deer. Expensive ammo. Kicked like a mule. Longest shot 276 yards.
I went to a single shot .357 mag H+R. Good groups out to 150 yards. Took several deer with it. Did not have any problem being underpowered - highly recommended for congested areas- as the bullets do not through penetrate.
This year I' m going with a CVA Hunter - a single shot break action in .450 Bushmaster. Very good groups out to 250 yards. More kinetic energy than the average 12 GA slug. Moderate recoil.
If the 450 proves out a good cartridge - next year I will get a 450 upper receiver and stick it on my Bushmaster lower. My buddy got one - and between the muzzle brake and the autoload action - it tames the felt recoil very well.
