It just keeps getting weirder.
Now I have zombie deer, and they're surrendering.
...
After a week of not getting a shot - and days of not even seeing anything -
.....
20 minutes till sundown - I saw a deer transiting West on the field. My blind is on the west edge of the field. I got my earplugs in - opened the South window, got my shooting sticks ready and the rifle propped up. Got the deer in the scope, and tracked till it stopped. Range 150 yards. Compensated elevation, and squeezed off the shot.
WTF?? The deer did this weird spin - and sorta danced about - then ran straight towards me. At about 50 yards, it stopped and looked up at the blind. No good shot - except a head shot. I was rapidly reloading - and set up for the shot. ( single shot rifle) I squeezed off a shot - and it went down like a sack of bricks.
One leg twitched a few times - then stilled.... I guess you gotta head shoot zombie deer - body shots don't do it.
I got ready to head back to the house - and opened the front door of the blind.
There was another deer in the field - heading my way...
I backed back inside and closed the door - and scrambled to ready for another shot.... Where are my earplugs??? Shit shit shit.....
I found the plugs - and jammed them in my ears.. Reload rifle.. Get blackout curtains up. Window open. Rifle in place on sticks....
I can see a rack in the scope - and I have a buck tag left. He keeps coming towards me. WTF? Is he surrendering????
Under 50 yards. Head on shot. A bad one. Headshot is the only option.
Whack!!
Crumples. No movement.
.....
So to recap.
4 deer so far.
1 nine point (10 point with battle damage), 1 seven point. 1 doe, and - a button buck.
I thought the first one tonight was a doe - I didn't see the antler nubs - as the .450 Bushmaster vaporized the top of the skull. I' ve never seen anything like it - except in movies.
I have pictures - if you really need to see such gore.
Now I have zombie deer, and they're surrendering.
