Not sure where to place this because it's more of rant. Just read a NYT article about the guy who rented the warehouse space in Oakland California that had a fire where 36 people died. The judge rejected his plea agreement because he would have served only a few years. The article was about how he's depressed in jail.
This whole story is personal to me because my friend's daughter (and her boyfriend) died in that fire. She was in nursing school, looking forward to a bright future. She will never get to get married, have babies, or work at her dream job. Two years she's still dead. Whenever he's finished with whatever sentence he gets, my friend's daughter will still be dead and their lives are forever changed.
Don't misunderstand, I think the owner of the building should have also been charged and I think the city of Oakland does bear a lot of responsibility but it was HIS name on the lease. He paid the bills, he allowed people to use that building (and encouraged it). He sublet it for various parties and collected money from people including my friend's daughter at the door when they entered it for a party. He also had to know it was unsafe (the building had a history of electrical problems he was well aware of). All so he could live his "dream" of being an artist. Fuck you

If you have to lie to bolster your argument, it’s time to rethink the validity of the argument.
