Lead acid batteries do work well - in stationary applications.
I have a bank of car batteries to supply power via inverter - as our power goes out on average 3 times a year. We have a 6.5 kW generator as well.
I just had to replace my old bank 2 years ago. The batteries I had were used, and on average 5 years old, when I got them ( free). They made it 10 years before the last ones lost holding capacity.
In mobile operations - it' s far less - as most batteries don't tolerate vibration well. Most are only good for 4-5 years.
Li-Po do have a great shelf life - 20 years or so --- but only if they are never discharged. The charging cycle shortens life considerably.
