Imo, freedom of speech must include the freedom to offend. I believe we all have an absolute right to be offended. We do not have a right NOT to be offended.
A quote commonly attributed to Noam Chomsky says: "We don't have freedom of speech so that we can talk about apple pie." Freedom of speech is about rocking the boat and questioning society. Not about "saying random things we wish to say."
PS: I have done a bit of research and cannot verify that this is Chomsky's quote. (Though I've heard that it is from multiple sources.) If anyone can provide info, it would be would be helpful.
One thing I've often said is that you should have freedom of speech, however ignorant or stupid it is. And others have the right to call you out on what you say. You're not free from the consequences of expressing your ideas/opinions
