I do think the "survival of the fittest" meme is one to be avoided. Evolution isn't about always being healthy, it ultimately is merely about getting to the point of reproduction. A healthy individual form of life can die before reproducing, while a not so fit individual life can reproduce then die.
The argument against "survival of the fittest" I like to make is this.
Say two guys are at a bar. One guy is 5 foot 2 and has a gun and fat as a pig, and had kids prior to going into the bar. The other guy is 6 foot 5, washboard abs, and no kids going into the bar. The short fat guy accidentally spills a beer on the fit guy, the fit guy gets angry, tries to start a fight with the fat guy, but the fat guy shoots and kills the fit guy. In this case the fat guy won at evolution, because he had kids and the fit guy did not. The host of that video got it right, it is "survival of the luckiest." But more to the point, "the ability to adapt."
Biologists don't like the phrase, either. I think they get tired of explaining that, in evolutionary terms, 'fitness' refers only to rate of reproduction.
