Saying a prayer publicly is not a problem as long as you do it as a private citizen and not as, say, a representative of a public school, particularly when your intended audience is impressionable young people.
I don't remember anything in the Bible that was particularly favorable towards public prayer, but I don't have an eidetic memory. I honestly don't know what tenet of the Bible you think made it necessary to lead other people not in your church in prayer in your capacity as a coach.
I can pray my head off at work as long as I don't disturb anyone. It would be very inappropriate to gather my team for a prayer, and they're adults. Their religion is their own business, not mine, and I don't have any business using my position of authority to involve them in my religious practices.

I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.
