Interestingly enough, the context of the statement, rendering to Caesar and to god, was the Pax Romana.
This wasn’t a conversation anyone had, but a rhetorical device concerning national identity and cultural purity. Giving unto ceasar is a play on Roman coinage, but there were other taxes to be paid. The temple tax and tithing , this was why there were money changers at the temple - you had to pay in Jewish coin for purity. This was gods.
Is it so surprising that a tax collectors religion tells people to pay all the taxes?
