The length of the modern marathon doesn't come from the Battle of Marathon. It comes from a request by Queen Alexandra in 1908 that the race start at Windsor Castle, so the royal grandchildren could watch it from their nursery window, and end at London's Olympic Stadium, a distance of 26.2 miles. This was soon accepted as the official distance for all future Olympic marathons.
And some people say the Royals have no power.
