I should point out that this scenario you seem to be playing with here has happened before, but not since 1884, and really would require the Republicans to have some sort of backbone (or at least a desire for something other than power. And when it came to presidents who didn't bumble into the office because they were VPs whose bosses died, it was in 1856.
