It began as soon as rival chieftains began squabbling over the ummah, exhorting their followers to do the same. While we might point to any number of current problems that islamic countries face - and these will be largely uniform between other countries with similar demographics and disparate religions....that one is a problem entirely of islam's own making.
The Sunni and Shiite faiths are composed by nothing but the Hadith books. Both sects will always count on the teachings of their own copies of the Hadith. In many times they ignore the Quran altogether too and interpret the Hadith only.
It should be noted that both institutions interpret the Quran based on what their versions of the Hadith said; and that is how the infinite loop keeps looping.
Foreign powers choose the weaker sect -and the most gullible- to support by supporting vassals that oppress the population from revolting and gaining its right, and give the precious natural resources of the region to the foreign host who support the vassal.
When a vassal is about to fall; the foreign host shows its real face, like we saw in Syria with Russia, or saw in Saudi Arabia with the U.S .
