Anyone familiar with Star Trek is familiar with the Borg. Sometimes, Borg drones are separated from the collective and regain their individuality. These individuals may still contain Borg implants in their bodies - very valuable things. The technology is super-advanced so unscrupulous individuals might have no problems with harvesting these implants from former drones for profit.
Imagine somebody using power tools to cut a former drone open - while the person is still alive and conscious. Drill into their skull, pluck out their eye. Vivisection. Well, watch the fifth episode of Picard and you won't have to imagine it.
Is it just me or is this way over the line? I don"t think even an R-rating covers this. Yet it's on TV with no warning at all of graphic scenes.
There's a strange problem with all the Hollywood "gritty reboots" of stuff we liked when we were kids.
Like I remember watching Batman on TV when I was about 4 years old. It was stupid and comic and the adults could laugh at it and the kids could send away for the kit from the fan club.
Then I guess we Boomers weren't willing to give up our favorite media crap when we got older, so they had to make Batman and other things progressively more "adult."
The first Star Trek, with Captain Kirk, was easy political metaphor, dressed up as an action show, aimed at the level of a junior high school kid who's beginning to notice injustice in the world. Think of the profound symbolism of Frank Gorshin white on one side and black on the other, fighting a guy who's reversed.
But new Star Trek, to keep the attention of its first fans, has to get gritty and "real." When deep down, in its essence, it's for kids. So you've basically got kid shows with torture scenes now.
I blame my generation, for not growing up properly. You should stop watching kid stuff when you're no longer a kid.
