Obama wasn't praising Castro because he liked authoritarians, but just like when a bad kid changes their tune, you are trying to push them in a better direction.
And Reagan did the same thing with Gorbachev. Was firm when he had to be, and challenged him to do the right thing.
That is not the same as what Trump does, whom literally wants to be an authoritarian himself.

^^^^ But again, not to get society to think for themselves, but to gain more club members. Although it is argued today by their modern church that was the case. Luther wanted the public to read so they could follow God better.
