Not that I encourage it, but it's an easy way to steal, simply by scanning a lower value item and bagging the more expensive item. My son works in retail, and that's what's happening. When there are 4 self serve check stands and it's busy, no way that the one employee can verify that the goods are being properly paid for. People make off with thousands of dollars in merchandise every week, just at his store.
It's know colloquially as 'the banana trick' - you scan your bananas 12 times and bag 12 rib steaks. It got the name a couple of years ago when Sainsbury's discovered that in one day they sold twice as many bananas as they had in stock.
