Once the southern states declared themselves in rebellion, they became a foreign country - their own laws, currency, political system and so forth. And they waged war on the United States. Why should they be honoured? How many statues of Hitler do you find along the streets of Warsaw? Or memorials to Mussolini in Addis Ababa? Statues of Stalin in Helsinki are by conspicuous their absence.

The analogy of statue of hitler in Warsaw might be lee’s statue in Pennsylvania, which he invaded. There are no public statues of Lee in Pennsylvania as far as I know.
But lee’s statue in virgina is rather different, because he he could not be said to have invaded virgina.
A better reason to remove lee’s statue might be he fought for a traitorous cause and so his Public statue Should not be found in the country which he betrayed.
