Ahem...they are full of shit.

An email from my audiologist at the beginning of all this let me know that there are face masks made for the deaf and hard of hearing that have clear panels over the mouth.  

As an aside.  Reading lips isn't the most important aspect.  Facial expressions are crucial to sign language.

As an aside, I recently started taking a course in NZSL.

Very cool!  I started ASL in 2009 and then had to have major surgery that severely limited the range of motion and control of of my arms and hands and had to stop.

I did take some classes on Deaf Culture and hate that I got derailed from the path.

Now I suffer from hearing loss but am still able to get along fairly well with, and without, my hearing aids depending on the setting.
