And the world lived a peaceful golden age for the rest of time. The dwarves grew rich and strong. The elves didn't need to retreat and their civilization flourished. The humans learned wisdom from the tutelage of the elder races. And everyone ignored the annoying fucking Hobbits!
If that had happened, Peter Jackson would have to find new source material from which to make terrible films.
