Trump SCOTUS pick to get boost from conservative groups
Quote:The White House, Republican lawmakers and their conservative allies are preparing for a whirlwind confirmation fight that will begin the moment President Trump announces his Supreme Court pick on Saturday.
The White House is already setting up meetings between the pending nominee and Republican senators, and Trump aides are discussing bringing on outside advisers to shepherd the president’s pick through the Senate, according to people familiar with the matter. A network of influential conservative groups is preparing to spend more than $20 million in support of the president’s nominee and is drafting advertising that will blanket airways next week, people involved in the effort said.
Mr. Trump’s announcement will end a week of speculation about the pick, and a growing number of Republicans want to get the jurist confirmed by Election Day.
White House officials and others close to the president think he is leaning toward choosing U.S. Appeals Court Judge Amy Coney Barrett of the Seventh Circuit in Chicago, according to people familiar with the process. Also mentioned as in the running is Judge Barbara Lagoa of the 11th Circuit in Atlanta.
Conservatives have been building a network of outside groups to boost Republican Supreme Court nominees for decades, beginning after the Senate rejected President Reagan’s nominee to the high court, Robert Bork, in 1987. Since then, the groups have raised millions of dollars from wealthy donors who view building a conservative judiciary as a top priority.
Although Mr. Trump’s nominee is expected to win Senate approval, conservative leaders say they aren’t taking any chances, especially after the polarizing 2018 confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The groups also believe that the confirmation fight will drive voters to the polls.
