Because it's a natural action, and without claws, they can't exercise their back and neck muscles normally.
Declawing is so wrong.
It is illegal in a lot of countries. I support its ban in the USA fully. It's not medically ethical to declaw cats and there is a growing number of veterinarians who will not do this surgery. They take a vow that starts with "first, do no harm". This is clearly doing harm.
If The Flintstones have taught us anything, it's that pelicans can be used to mix cement.
