"Spiritual darkness" is a conveniently meaningless term, usually signifying "not believing what *I* think they should be believing, and not doing what *I* think they should be doing."
And since "spiritual" is merely a state of mind with a thin veneer of mythology, it can change in an instant to a more beneficial state of mind. Certainly no gods are required to make this happen, and certainly no gods are busting their asses trying to rescue people who are suffering in prolonged, hellish mental states.
