(November 6, 2011 at 11:44 pm)Stimbo Wrote: There was a story about a rather famous scientist (and it's aggravating me that I can't remember his name) who was also a pretty devout xtian; apparently he took a pair of scissors to his bible and chopped out all the supernatural, mythical and other supposedly non-literal bits. When he'd finished he remarked something about being unable to pick up what was left of the book without it falling completely apart. Can anyone throw some light on who this was? As far as I remember, he remained a believer despite this.
His name was Kurt Wise. I heard this story in The God Delusion and Richard Dawkins actually begrudgingly gave him kudos for being totally honest about the relationship between science and faith, even if he did choose the wrong side. And besides, that story always bugged me. Why cut the parts out? Did he forget that books usually have text on both sides of paper? Why couldn't he just use a sharpie to black the text out?
