Yes, it’s a fact. Because gun owners have bought into the myth that democrats are going to disarm them. 

Another fact is that Obama was more friendly to gun rights than Trump, which tells me that gun owners don’t have much in the way of political savvy.

It is not a myth.
We just have a difference about the term " disarm".
Restricting the types of personal arms a law abiding citizen can own is " disarming" as far as I am concerned.

I do agree with you about the Obama vs Trump in relation to gun rights.
This explains why I DID vote for President Obama (2nd term) and did NOT (ever) vote for President Trump.
