Having lived in a big city, sorry hate to tell you, but trains DO go underground and then above ground. Sorry that bothers you. And the common name for that transportation above or below ground is "SUBWAY".
Yes and no. Trains go above and below ground, that's correct. But 'subway' is the name for the underground part of a metro system. Whether a particular machine is above or below the surface determines whether is an elevated/surface train or a subway train.
