I don't understand the logic behind why one life is more imortant or less important.
Well, nothing in the utterance "Thank God" or any similar utterance entails that some life is more important than another. Besides, anyone who died has something they could've been grateful for. For any given cause or circumstance of death, there are infinitely many worse circumstances of death that were avoided.
