But any movie from manga adaptation rarely works...
Both are equally absurd & full of CGI...
So why..?
Different tone and different values. American audiences and production companies strive for a certain beat for beat playbook that works with the ideals of American comic and action heroes. But Japanese manga protagonists are often darker, more ambiguous, more emotionally complex and they have different ideals and motivations culturally. But the studios try to make them as an American action hero and it fails to capture the original character.
Tl;dr: American studios just don't "get" manga stories. Or rather, even if they do understand the stories and values, they think American audiences are too stupid to get it.
