It’s not illegal to be a white supremacist, but even white supremacists are ashamed to give voice to what they know themselves to be.
Puts their constant complaints about how society is telling them to be ashamed of their whiteness in context.
I’m not hearing it, nobody says as much to me... but they are. Maybe it’s not their whiteness that the white grievance complex refers to?
Of course, the rise of the alt-right shows how social shaming can backfire. White supremacists are rightly shamed for their execrable ideology, and this ends up reinforcing pre-existing racist groups and creating new hate groups where previously there had only been jackasses on message boards with very shitty opinions. And once a politician with their views actually ends up becoming popular, it results in them becoming more visible and powerful than they have been in half a century. And sometimes, it suckers in idiots who feel attacked for their unexamined beliefs and ends up feeding them lines if they don’t have the brains to see through their bullshit.
Not saying social shaming isn’t important or necessary. Just that it’s a double edged sword.
