As long as those who wield power have dark secrets to protect, opposition will be their default stance on any proposal deemed hazardous to said secrets.

Honestly, in the case of CRT, the “secrets” are pretty easy to find. Perhaps it’s like Sir Humphrey Appleby said (and I’m paraphrasing here, though the exact words can be found in Series 2, Episode 1 of Yes, Minister), “the public was willing to allow these abuses to go on for years. What outraged them was being told.”
